Description

John Jay High School has recently expanded its Fine Arts facilities, adding an impressive 65,000 square feet dedicated to music, theater, and visual arts. This state-of-the-art addition enhances both the educational experience and creative opportunities for students.

One feature of the new facility is the black box theater, which provides aspiring actors and theater technicians with a hands-on learning environment that mirrors a professional theater setting. Additionally, three visual arts classrooms have been strategically designed to maximize natural light, fostering a bright and inspiring workspace for student artists.

The expansion also significantly enhances the school’s band, orchestra and choir programs. The new music suite includes a large SoundLok ensemble practice room equipped with VAE active acoustic technology, and six individual SoundLok practice rooms, along with conveniently located music faculty offices.

Students also benefit from high-quality equipment such as Wenger Student chairs, StageTek seated risers, and Classic 50 music stands, ensuring an optimal learning and performance experience.

For organization and efficiency, classrooms are equipped with Wenger String Instrument Racks and UltraStor Cabinets, Uniform storage is held in GearBoss high-density storage carts, the bandroom features a separate percussion storage room outfitted with GearBoss Shelving, and the department’s sheet music has a home in a Wenger Music Library System.

At the heart of the Fine Arts facility is the auditorium, meticulously designed to deliver a full theatrical experience. Its striking royal blue accents pay homage to the traditional theater curtain, setting the stage for professional-grade performances.

Architect Jerry Lammers highlights the significance of the new addition, stating, “The design-forward façade of the new John Jay Fine Arts center sends a positive visual message to the community – ‘something truly exciting is happening at your neighborhood public school.'”

With these enhancements, John Jay High School reaffirms its commitment to fostering creativity, artistic excellence, and educational enrichment for its students and the surrounding community.
