Description
Located at Brainerd High School, The Gichi-ziibi Center for the Arts features a 1,200-seat proscenium theatre featuring a custom Diva shell and Maestro ceilings for adjustable acoustic effects. The center was a dream conceived by several individuals and organizations throughout the Brainerd community.
For students, the new facility means enhanced acoustics and a larger stage — both literally and figuratively — to showcase their artistic accomplishments. The main theatre is equipped with J.R Clancy Power Assist Rigging and controls for limitless motion control and powerful visual effects.
A state-of-the-art auditorium was in the original building plans when the high school was built in the 1960s, but funds were lacking. The Brainerd Public Schools Board of Education, in collaboration with teachers, administrators, the local arts community and local organizations all contributed to the planning and building of the new performing arts center.
The Gichi-ziibi Center also includes a flexible black box theatre, ensemble rehearsal rooms, practice rooms, makeup and dressing rooms, and a scene shop.
In addition to supporting music and drama performances for the high school, the Gichi-ziibi Center is regularly used for events in the Brainerd community. One major participant in the project was the Lakes Area Music Festival which produces symphonic and chamber music concerts, ballet, and opera with professionals from across the country. The Brainerd taxpayers voted to provide additional funds to support these larger events.
The attached Brainerd High School music suite was also updated as part of the project, adding UltraStor Cabinets for instrument storage and Nota Chairs, Classic 50 Stands and Signature Risers in classrooms.
