Challenges of opening Opera House’s
in the Middle East

The Technical challenges working alongside consultants, clients and contractors and the integration of ‘theatre practices’ into the region in realizing the building and operations of the Royal Opera House Muscat, Oman and Dubai Opera, UAE

About Geoffrey Wheel

Geoffrey Wheel is the Technical Director of the Dubai Opera, one of the latest Opera House’s in the world and the first one of its kind as a multi-form venue in the UAE.

Geoffrey started out in theatre by training for 3-years at Croydon College of Art in Lighting Design and Production Management. Following this he moved to a role of Chief Electrician at the Devonshire Park Theatre in Eastbourne, UK. After this he was asked to move to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, UK to work in the lighting department. Whilst there he toured with the Sadler’s Well’s Royal Ballet (Birmingham Royal Ballet) before successfully moving to Assistant Production Manager, promoted to Production Manager and then Assistant Technical Director. Prior to the GBP 250 million redevelopment of the Royal Opera House in 1997, he became Head of Technical Departments, leading the technical departments through two years of redevelopment and being responsible for all Technical support for the Royal Opera, Royal Ballet, Linbury Studio and ROH productions and corporate events in the UK and touring abroad.

In June 2010 he took the brave move to leave the ROH after being asked to move to Muscat, Oman, to start afresh as the Technical Director and then Director of Operations, in creating a technical team for the opening of the new Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman. This was to be the first opera house in the Arabian Peninsula which opened to world acclaim in October 2011.

Following this in May 2015, he was asked to move to Dubai, UAE to open the new Dubai Opera creating another new technical team and all the challenges this brought with it. He and his team successfully opened the World class Dubai Opera in August 2016 where he currently resides looking after all Technical and Facilities management roles on behalf of DO.

Stage Machinery Inspections - duties for manufacturers and operators

The field of stage engineering and machinery is a complex area with often tailored and custom-built equipment. The client’s demands include high expectations for both - availability as well as for safety aspects, while sometimes both seem to be competing. This session is introducing responsibilities for the manufacturers as well as for the users and operators of stage machinery and engineering systems.

About Oliver Leigers

With over 20 years of experience in the industry Oliver has been working with clients, manufacturers, and theatre consultants before he became an accredited BGV C1 expert and inspector in 2006. He joined Theatre Projects Consultants from 2004 - 2011 with responsibilities for developing and integrating theatre engineering systems in various projects.

Since 2011 he is solely working with theateringenieur.de, that he found back in 2001. Oliver's activities are demanded internationally and include BGV C1 inspections as well as advising and consulting on the design, development and integration of engineering systems for venues, shows and productions.

Oliver is also lecturing at the technical theatre academy in Baden-Baden, Germany, as well as for international events and conferences.
